Liberal Democrats surge in opinion polls

The most popular party leader - Charles Kennedy

Following success in the Parliamentary by-elections last week, the Lib Dems have surged in a recent poll.

In the latest ICM poll for the Guardian, support for the Lib Dems has rocketed to 25% from 20% in May.

The Labour Party and the Conservatives have been the main losers.

Support for Labour plummeted to 35% from 39% in May while support for the Tories remains a very lacklustre 30% down from 34% over the same period.

It is reported questions are now being asked within the Tory party about Michael Howard's leadership. The Conservatives are failing to make the breakthrough they desperately need one to two years from a General Election.

Increasingly, the public are turning to the Liberal Democrats as the only credible alternative to Labour.
