Laura Murphy, "we need to improve the quality of life in Ramslye and Showfields"
LibDem PPC, Laura Murphy and Borough Councilor, Peter Crawford met with residents of Ramslye and Showfields recently to discuss problems on the estates.
"As we were walking around the estates, talking to residents a few weeks ago, it was clear that they were all very worried about how the area had deteriorated in the last 16 months. It was agreed that we would have a public meeting so that the issues could be aired and we could decide on a way forward." said Laura Murphy.
The main issues raised at the public meeting were the fears that parents had about the drug use in the area and the risk to their children from discarded needles and bloodied doorways. There were also calls for an increased police presence to deal with anti-social behaviour, intimidation, bullying and physical assault.
Cllr Peter Crawford said, "People spoke about the amount of litter and poor lighting in certain areas. They were afraid to go out at night. They also wanted improved support from agencies such as the housing associations."
Laura Murphy added, "with all the attention given to areas such as Sherwood, where excellent things have been achieved, it appears that Showfields and Ramslye has slipped under the radar."
At the public meeting it was agreed to set up a community association so that the agencies could work with residents to improve the area. "It is vital that the local community gets the support they need to improve the quality of life in Showfields and Ramslye", said Laura Murphy. "They live there, they know what they need. Now is the time for the agencies to listen to them and work with them."
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 11 January at 7.30pm. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the association then they can ring 07801 013 705.
