Last year the County Council introduced a Community Grants scheme whereby each County Councillor had £10,000 each to spend on projects and initiatives which would benefit their community. After the first year of the scheme the seven Conservative County Councillors in the Tunbridge Wells Borough Council area managed to spend only £54,043 of the maximum £70,000. With many parts of the County spending 100% of their grants the Tunbridge Wells Tories are bottom of the league with 77.2%.
"Liberal Democrats strongly believe in devolving power, but the Tories in Tunbridge Wells are just wasting a golden opportunity by not spending the money they have been given in ways that truly empower people" said Cllr Tom Symondson. "If county councillors can't even agree what to spend £70,000 on, how can they possibly manage the county's budget of well over £1 billion? In fact this just backs us the weak assessment given to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council last year. Taxpayers money is not safe with the Conservatives".
