Plastics recycling finally arrives in Tunbridge Wells

August 25, 2006 4:50 PM

After years of campaigning by Tunbridge Wells Liberal Democrats, limited recycling of plastic has finally come to the town. So far, the scheme only applies to plastic bottles, and they must be taken to stationary recycling points.

David Mills recycles plastic

Councillor David Mills supports the new recycling initiative

"We welcome this initiative" said Councillor David Mills, "but why do the people of Tunbridge Wells always have to wait so long to be given the sort of public services they deserve? And why is the Tory Council so half hearted about recycling? It's good for us, good for the environment and good for the planet, so let's do a thorough and worthwhile job, and collect plastic from people's doorsteps!"

Some things you may not know about plastic: -

  • The world's annual consumption of plastic materials has increased from around 5 million tonnes in the 1950s to nearly 100 million tonnes today
  • It is estimated that nearly 3 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced a year in the UK
  • Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down in a landfill
  • If you lined up all the polystyrene foam cups made in just 1 day they would circle the earth!
